Artists in residence: the remaking of Sketch

It seems apt that the creative and innovative powerhouse of Germany is also where a new design and technology-driven concept of hospitality is taking shape. Housed in a brick-red building protected by the city for its monumental and historical significance, Sketch is only 4 minutes away from Boxhagener Platz. Inspired by the neighbourhood’s indie charm, Sketch’s interior pays homage to the city’s alternative culture. Large windows extending from the high ceilings welcome sunlight into the 38 newly furnished rooms and suites.
Located in the electric district of Friedrichshain, the neighbourhood is home to many of Berlin’s famous landmarks including techno clubs like Berghain, political murals at the East Side Gallery, a preserved section of the Berlin Wall and Soviet-era buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee. The artisan soaked streets are littered with cool cafés and antique theatres.
In the autumn of 2020, the story of Sketch began. A former antiquated space is converted with boutique design. The transformation is taking shape, and the mock-up room is full-fledged showcasing our vision to create a design-led space aimed to inspire. Grounded in earthy tones and welcoming colours Sketch takes an eclectic direction, one out of four different routes of COSI interior design. The furniture is function-driven yet elegant and contemporary. Refined finishes, coupled with sculptural details and handpicked elements all contribute to Sketch’s modern ambience.
To celebrate the city’s vibrant art scene, the rooms in Sketch are embellished with custom commissioned abstract art pieces from artists across Europe. After a long refurbishment process undertaken by COSI, Sketch is a testament to our in-house design. Gestural and free-spirited brush strokes on porcelain white canvases line the perfectly black walls. The rooms are infused with the spirit and soul of Berlin. Sketch is the ultimate reflection of its surroundings, embracing the city’s urban renaissance and dynamic cultural scene.
Like all our locations, Sketch welcomes guests to a complete digital journey. Our contactless concept, powered by an electronic key system and 24/7 virtual concierge, aims to elevate your stay and provide hassle-free travel, allowing you to kick back and relax.
